About Italian Journal of Linguistics

Focus, Scope and Objectives

Italian Journal of Linguistics (= IJL; ISSN 2499-8117 print; 2499-8125 online) was founded in 1989 by Pier Marco Bertinetto and first appeared as Rivista di Linguistica. First published by Rosenberg & Sellier (Torino), since 1995 it is published by Pacini (Pisa). The journal was renamed with the current title denomination starting with the 1999 volume.

IJL is an Open Access peer-review journal addressing all relevant aspects of linguistics, as broadly construed, hosting contributions from different schools and applying different methods. IJL seeks to bridge the gap between descriptive and theoretical research, welcoming work which makes complex language data accessible to those unfamiliar with the language or language area under study, as well as work which makes complex theoretical positions more accessible to those working outside that theoretical framework.

Periodicity: biannual. Together with the online Open Access version, available at: https://www.italian-journal-linguistics.com, a printed version can be obtained on a print-on-demand (or regular) basis against payment of
€ 55,00. This amount may undergo periodical adjustment.

Language: English is the main language. Very occasionally, contributions in French, Spanish and Italian have been accepted (approximately 3% of all papers).

IJL is on the Web of Science and is indexed in Scopus and ERIH (European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences). It is also listed among the “A journals” in the Italian ANVUR ranking.

Editorial Policies

IJL by and large follows the Ethical Code recommended for Publications in the Human Sciences domain, as inspired by the standards for best practices proposed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The journal’s adaptation of the Code is available at the following link: https://www.italian-journal-linguistics.com/app/uploads/2021/05/Codice-etico-Engl.pdf

The Ethical Code contains detailed recommendations concerning the responsibilities of Publisher, Editors, Authors, and Reviewers. Issues such as authorship, conflict of interest (for both authors and reviewers), quotations, confidentiality, plagiarism, ethical approval of the relevant experimental investigations (to name some of the main issues) are explicitly addressed. Essentially:

Editors are expected to:

  • act in a balanced, objective and fair way while evaluating manuscripts, considering solely their intellectual merit without regard to authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.

  • give authors a reasonable opportunity to respond to any complaints. Documentation associated with any such complaints should be retained.

  • not disclose any information about a manuscript that is submitted to the journal to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Reviewers are expected to be professional, honest, courteous, prompt, and constructive. They should:

  • assist in improving the quality of the published paper by reviewing the manuscript objectively, in a timely manner.

  • comment on major strengths and weaknesses of manuscript, independent of the design, methodology, results, and interpretation of the study.

  • maintain the confidentiality of any information supplied by the editor or author and not spread the manuscript without the author’s explicit consent.

  • alert the editor to any published or submitted content that is substantially similar to that under review.

  • be aware of any potential conflicts of interest (financial, institutional, collaborative or other relationships between the reviewer and author) and alert the editor to these.

Authors have an ethical obligation to submit creditable research results for publication. They should:

  • confirm that the manuscript as submitted is not under consideration or accepted for publication elsewhere.

  • confirm that all the work in the submitted manuscript is original, acknowledge and cite any content reproduced from other sources, and obtain permission to reproduce content from other sources.

  • declare any potential conflicts of interest.

  • maintain records of data associated with their submitted manuscript, and supply or provide access to these data, on reasonable request.

  • ensure that any studies involving human subjects conform to national, local and institutional laws and requirements and confirm that approval has been sought and obtained where appropriate. Authors should obtain express permission from human subjects and respect their privacy.

Peer Review Process

The Editorial Board of the Journal makes an immediate screening of all submitted articles. Articles that fail to reach the scientific standards of the journal are desk-rejected. Those articles which satisfy the requirements are sent to expert reviewers and subsequently judged for acceptability for publication. The peer-review procedure involves two experts, or three in case of disagreement (a rare event). Every effort is made to provide an editorial decision as to acceptance for publication within 3 months of submission. Referees may request a revision of the article. The referees names will not be made available to authors, unless the reviewer autonomously decides to reveal her/his identity. Likewise, the authors’ anonymity is not enforced but left to the individuals’ choice.

The final decision on acceptability is the Editors’ responsibility.
